A FRENCH ORMOLU GRAND MANTEL
CLOCK BY RAINGO FRÈRES, PARIS, WITH
BRONZE EQUESTRIAN SCULPTURE
“Charles Martel Battles Saracen Pasha”, a bronze sculpture
with warm brown patina, surmounts a monumental Grecian
Revival ormolu mantel clock with pendulum, gilt dial,
surrounded by ormolu openwork, with hand enameled Arabic
numerals, speed control post above noon; 8-day time brass
movement has a silk thread suspension striking on a bell, as
proper for the period. The movement back plate stamped
with “RAINGO FRERES, Paris”, “A St. NICOLAS Vtor CALLY”,
“299”, and “7”; ormolu apron stamped with “299” on the
back. Pendulum marked with “P” inside Spades and “Made
in England”. Black slate “French marble” case fitted with two
mythological winged beasts clutching a serpent, the ormolu
apron centered by a maiden head; raised on naturalistic
openwork scroll feet.
