central to a meaningful life equaled his dedication to science.
Born in 1909 in Bombay, Bhabha grew up surrounded by
intellectual and artistic influences. His grandfather, Hormusi,
an educator, cultivated a family library rich in history, literature,
and poetry, while his father, Jehangir Hormusji Bhabha,
amassed volumes on the Italian Renaissance and European art.
Bhabha demonstrated exceptional artistic promise in his youth,
winning multiple awards from the Bombay Art Society. At 17, he
painted a self-portrait inspired by Rembrandt, showcasing his
technical precision. Trained by Jehangir Lalkaka in the academic LANDSCAPE UNTITLED (LANDSCAPE)
style, Bhabha’s artistic pursuits complemented his rigorous 19.6 x 24 in (50 x 60.8 cm) 19.8 x 24 in (50.2 x 61 cm)
scientific training. Oil on canvas Oil on canvas
