Sital Bandyopadhyay was a self-taught artist born in
Barisal, East Bengal (now Bangladesh) during pre-
independence India. Deeply devoted to Krishna, his
artistic identity revolved around portraying Radha
and Krishna in a refreshing and evocative manner.
Active between 1910 and 1930, Bandyopadhyay’s
work emerged in an era dominated by Raja Ravi
Varma’s classical style, yet he moved beyond
traditional idol-like depictions. His art captured
intimate scenes of romance and love, infusing his
creations with emotional depth and vitality.
Bandyopadhyay’s work was characterised by a
unique fusion of Indian traditional forms with the
academic expression of European techniques.
Using high-quality imported Italian materials, his
paintings—whether in oil or watercolour—have
retained their brilliance even after a century.
Bandyopadhyay’s legacy lies in his ability to innovate
within traditional themes, creating timeless treasures
of Radha-Krishna imagery that continue to appeal
to enthusiasts of Indian classical art. His oeuvre,
waiting to be rediscovered, remains a testament to
his devotion, talent, and artistic ingenuity.
