By the early 1960s, F N Souza had
firmly established himself within
London’s vibrant art scene, renowned
for his provocative themes and sardonic
critiques of clergy. His works featured bold
brushstrokes, vivid colours, and intense
psychological undertones. This period
marked heightened experimentation, as
his earlier thick black outlines transitioned
to sharper, more gestural lines.
A pivotal moment came in 1960 when
Souza received an Italian Government
scholarship, enabling a European tour. In
Rome, he produced strikingly energetic
works dominated by red. Throughout
the decade, Souza’s distinctive style and
fearless exploration of subject matters
solidified his position as a modern master.
