A collection of works that brilliantly captures the vibrant spirit of Indian
street musicians, Krishen Khanna’s Bandwallah series is a theme the artist
has constantly revisited throughout his career. As the legend goes, it was
the 1970s, and while returning from his studio, the artist found himself in
a traffic jam perpetuated by a wedding procession or baarat. Watching
the bandwallas belt out tunes while balancing their big brass instruments THE ANATOMY LESSON UNTITLED
in their bright red costumes led to an epiphany for him and these people 69 x 96 in (175 x 244 cm) 45 x 111 in (114 x 281 cm)
