Provenance: Property from an important
collection based in Kolkata. Artwork was
acquired by the present owner directly
from the artist.
An ardent follower of Sufi philosophy
and spirituality, Manjit Bawa translated
his interests onto his canvases. He drew
inspiration from Indian mythology for his
subject matter, forging a unique visual
language that is reminiscent of Rajput
miniature painting, surrounded by large
areas of vibrant colour. Among the many
mythological figures he painted, Krishna,
Kali and Shiva became recurring motifs.
His technique and style lend to the
ethereal nature of these figures, who he
considered icons of his country.
