M F Husain’s ‘The Lost Continent Series’,
conceived in 2005 during his stay in London, is
a profound testament to the artist’s exploration
of human values amidst a backdrop of global
turmoil. Over two months, Husain poured his
passion and integrity into this series, creating
large-scale canvases that serve as windows into
his perception of humanity’s moral decline.
At the heart of the series are recurring motifs
such as the maternal figure and the abandoned
child, reflecting Husain’s deep-seated concerns
about the erosion of fundamental values.
Through vibrant colours, strong lines, and mixed
textures, he brings to life scenes that resonate
with emotional depth and social commentary.
Among the most striking elements are Husain’s
reinterpretation of mythological symbols, such
as the monkey figure inspired by Hanuman
myths, seamlessly woven into contemporary
narratives. These paintings, with their
conceptual richness and thematic coherence,
offer profound insights into the artist’s
observations and discontentment with the state
of the world.
Despite the passage of time, ‘The Lost Continent
Series’ remains a timeless exploration of
humanity’s struggle to uphold its moral
compass, inviting viewers to reflect on the
timeless relevance of Husain’s artistic vision.
