Bharti Kher is renowned for her use of the ‘bindi’ in her paintings and
sculptures. It first started appearing in her work in 1995 and since
then, has become a leitmotif, through which she speaks to the world.
Traditionally a symbol of femininity, strength and spirituality, the bindi
has undergone a subliminal transformation through her art. To the
artist, the bindi is a mutable medium that she can defamiliarise and
reclaim in numerous ways. It adorns her creations, articulating her
thoughts and beliefs. Her work, which is loaded with symbolism,
serves as an attempt at initiating a dialogue between the metaphysical
and material pursuits of life through the eyes of the viewer. With her
manipulation of found objects and their juxtapositions, she creates
new meanings for familiar subjects, lending to the poetry of her works.
