Jitish Kallat’s work often draws on the idea of time and history. A
multimedia artist, disciplines such as painting, photography, collages,
sculpture, and installation occupy equal importance in his oeuvre.
Born in Mumbai in 1974, Kallat received his Bachelor’s degree in
painting from Sir J J School of Art, Mumbai in 1996. Rendering
his paintings with images that surround him such as billboards
and advertisement elements, Kallat’s work is often biographical
addressing profound themes of time, death, personal relations, etc.
Some of his best works celebrate his home city of Mumbai.
Some of his early works were based on billboards and the popular
advertising culture of Mumbai as well as socio-economic and
political circumstances going on in the city. It can be said that Kallat’s
works alternate between his views on self, city, and the nation.
Jitish Kallat has exhibited across the country and the world with
shows at museums and institutions such as Tate Modern (London),
Martin-Gropius-Bau (Berlin), Gallery of Modern Art (Brisbane),
Kunstmuseum (Bern), Serpentine Galleries (London), to name a
few. He was also the curator and artistic director of Kochi-Muziris
Biennale 2014. Jitish Kallat lives and works in Mumbai.
