Feral Sphere is a 2007 sculpture by eminent contemporary artist
Jagannath Panda. From afar, the orb seems solely ornamental
with gilded veins but upon closer inspection, the work reveals its
true self. Surrounding the veins and throughout the fabric, one can
witness a plethora of crawling insects. As the title indicates, the web
of creatures invading the sphere indicate the feral nature that they
revert to as they escape domestication.
The large spherical structure, constructed of acrylic paint, fabric, glue
and fibreglass, is reminiscent of his earlier works from the beginning
of his career. One such work is Sphere, executed in 2002, which
achieved him recognition at the Royal College of Art, London.
