Krishen Khanna’s Bandwallah series is a remarkable
collection that brilliantly captures the vibrant
spirit of Indian street musicians. This theme
has been a constant presence throughout the
artist’s career, one he has frequently revisited.
As the story goes, it was during the 1970s when
Khanna, on his way back from his studio, found
himself caught in a traffic jam caused by a wedding
procession or baarat. Watching the bandwallahs
in their bright red uniforms, balancing large brass
instruments while playing festive tunes, sparked
a moment of inspiration. These figures became a
 recurring subject in his work.

Reflecting on his choice in an earlier interview,
Khanna remarked: “In a way, bandwallahs are a relic
of the past, a legacy of the British rulers, who now
belt out Indian film tunes in traditional celebrations.
The uniforms add grandeur and also give certain
anonymity to them, almost like the military
personnel.... There is something sad and musical
 about them.”

Khanna's paintings in the Bandwallah series are
characterised by bold brushstrokes, vivid colours,
and dynamic compositions. He masterfully portrays
the bandwallahs in their traditional costumes,
playing an array of instruments. The musicians'
expressive faces and lively movements evoke a
sense of joy and festivity, inviting the viewer into the
bustling atmosphere of the street performances.
