Husain frequently portrayed horses in various
settings throughout his career, using them to
explore themes of religion, mythology, and
spirituality. He once remarked that his bold
representations of horses were intended
to symbolise grace and freedom. Through
these pieces, he sought to express both his
personal connection to the animals and their
universal significance.
His horse-themed paintings were celebrated
for their dynamic energy and ability to evoke
strong emotions from viewers. Although
artists have long favoured the horse as a
subject, Husain’s distinctive, confident
brushwork and passionate depictions made
his work stand out. His portrayals of horses
have continued to inspire future generations
of Indian artists.
