A RARE JAPANESE PORCELAIN VASE
by Makuzu Kozan
The thickly potted vase stands on a rounded bulbous base. The body is decorated with
a raised fishnet pattern throughout and features enamel depictions of fish, lobsters
and mollusks swimming through foliage. The rim of the vase is glazed with blue and
red hues and gilt, and showcases a ho-oh bird and a dragon gripping a jewel (tama).
Makuzu Kozan was a renowned potter who achieved recognition from the Meiji
emperor who spoke highly of his vases at the National Industrial Exhibition (1877).

A CHINESE HALL BENCH
An exquisite Chinese hall bench crafted from richly polished teakwood. The bench is
adorned with intricate hand-carved designs featuring symbolic decorative motifs of
Oriental tradition. The opulent carvings extend across the backrest, arms and seat.
The armrests are meticulously carved and extend in the motif of mythical dragons, a
recurring motif in Chinese culture symbolising strength, protection, and power. The
dragon heads at the ends of the armrests are sculpted with great detail. The bench
rests on four carved claw-and-ball feet. Designed for both functionality and elegance,
the bench features a flat, sturdy seat.
