In 1950, Sayed Haider Raza travelled to Paris on a
grant from the French Government to study at the
École Nationale des Beaux-Arts. While in Paris,
Raza gained commercial success and, in 1956, was
honoured with the prestigious Prix de la Critique,
which brought him international acclaim. During
his time in France, Raza was influenced by Post-
 Impressionist artists, particularly Paul Cézanne,
whom he greatly admired for his mastery in creating
 structure through colour.
Raza later relocated to Gorbio, where he became
captivated by the French countryside. The
landscape with its trees, mountains, villages, and
churches became a central theme in his work.

The presented lot, painted in 1958, is characteristic
of this period. It features heavy impasto and
architectural elements within an abstract lyrical
landscape, with a palette inspired by Raza’s
enduring interest in Rajput miniature painting.
