Horses began to appear as a recurring motif in M F
Husain’s work during the early 1950s, initially depicted
as stoic and contemplative figures. As he delved deeper
into this theme, his portrayals evolved to become
increasingly animated and dynamic, capturing the
vitality of the form.
Husain viewed the horse as a symbol of grace and
freedom. Reflecting on his work, he remarked, “My
horses, like lightning, cut across many horizons.
Seldom are their hooves shown. They hop around the
spaces. From the battlefield of Karbala to Bankura
terracotta, from the Chinese Tse pei Hung horse to the
St. Marco horse, from the ornate armoured Duldul to the
commanding white of Ashwamedh… the cavalcade of
my horses is multidimensional.”
