               Jehangir Sabavala was born in 1922 into an affluent   typically executed in his signature palette of subdued
               Parsi family in Bombay, where he was nurtured in an   oil colours. Initially focused on portraits and still-lifes,
               intellectually  vibrant  environment. Sabavala  began   he gradually explored other styles, eventually
               his studies at Elphinstone College, Bombay, before   developing a unique artistic vocabulary. His cubist
               graduating  from  Sir  J  J  School  of Art  in  1944.  He   landscapes, such as the present lot, introduced
               then pursued further education at some of Europe’s   serenity and depth through the use of receding
               esteemed art institutions, including the Heatherley   geometric planes.

               André Lhote, Paris (1948-51), Académie Julian, Paris   His paintings are held in prestigious collections in
               (1953-54), and Académie de la Grande Chaumière,   India and abroad. He was honoured with the Padma
               Paris (1957).                           Shri by the Government of India in 1977 and received
                                                       the Kala Ratna from the All India Fine Arts and Crafts
               Known for his distinctive style, Sabavala combined   Society in 2001. Arun Khopkar’s film about his life,
               academic, impressionistic, and cubist influences,   ‘Colours of Absence’, won a national award in 1994.
