Moments
In Time
The presented lot is a painting by revered artist Bikash
Bhattacharjee, whose powerful visual take on the human condition
redefined the artistic narrative in Bengal.
Executed during the 1980s, the painting belongs to a period when
Bhattacharjee was dedicated to highlighting both the challenges
and the strength of the human spirit. Titled, ‘Santu The Penciller,’
is an oil on canvas work executed in 1984. In this composition,
Bhattacharjee charges the scene with cinematic techniques
and lighting to guide the viewer to his protagonist Santu, who is
positioned off-centre. Donning a brightly coloured shirt and a shiny
silver watch, Santu is depicted sitting cross-legged on a charpoy
and looking ahead in a contemplative stance.
A profound sense of social awareness was always evident in
Bikash Bhattacharjee’s work. He portrayed the diverse segments of
Kolkata’s society, showcasing middle-class women, street vendors,
political leaders, and beggars with equal passion. His protagonists
were often who played pivotal roles in Kolkata’s social fabric, yet
remained frequently overlooked. Bhattarcharjee’s art shines a
spotlight on the intricate socio-economic dynamics of the vibrant
Bengali metropolis, a perspective uniquely enriched by his deep
local knowledge. It is this intimate familiarity with the city that
infuses his works with a rarely seen authenticity, allowing viewers
to glimpse the genuine essence of Kolkata’s diverse social strata
through his artistic lens.
