                                                               The presented lot is a painting by revered artist Bikash
                                                               Bhattacharjee, whose powerful visual take on the human condition
                                                               redefined the artistic narrative in Bengal.

                                                               Executed during the 1980s, the painting belongs to a period when
                                                               Bhattacharjee was dedicated to highlighting both the challenges
                                                               and the strength of the human spirit. Titled, ‘Santu The Penciller,’
                                                               is an oil on canvas work executed in 1984. In this composition,
                                                               Bhattacharjee charges the scene with cinematic techniques
                                                               and lighting to guide the viewer to his protagonist Santu, who is
                                                               positioned off-centre.  Donning a brightly coloured shirt and a shiny
                                                               silver watch, Santu is depicted sitting cross-legged on a charpoy
                                                               and looking ahead in a contemplative stance.

                                                               A  profound sense of social awareness was always evident in
                                                               Bikash Bhattacharjee’s work. He portrayed the diverse segments of
                                                               Kolkata’s society, showcasing middle-class women, street vendors,
                                                               political leaders, and beggars with equal passion. His protagonists
                                                               were often who played pivotal roles in Kolkata’s social fabric, yet
                                                               remained  frequently overlooked. Bhattarcharjee’s  art shines a
                                                               spotlight on the intricate socio-economic dynamics of the vibrant
                                                               Bengali metropolis, a perspective uniquely enriched by his deep
                                                               local knowledge. It is this intimate familiarity with the city that
                                                               infuses his works with a rarely seen authenticity, allowing viewers
                                                               to glimpse the genuine essence of Kolkata’s diverse social strata
                                                               through his artistic lens.
