During the decade of the 1950s, S. H. Raza
found recognition globally and was hailed
as a revered representative of modern
Indian art. His first show in France was held
at Saint-Placide in 1952 alongside other
stalwarts such as Akbar Padamsee and
F.N. Souza. Several exhibitions followed and
so did awards. In 1956, he received the Prix
de La Critique award becoming the first
foreign artist to receive the honour. The jury,
led by French art critic Claude Roger Marx,
comprised 14 artists. He was also lauded
by Jacques Lassaigne, who would go on
to become the Director of the Museum of
Modern Art of Paris and Rudy Von Leyden.
As a result of the prestigious award, he was
then invited to participate in the Venice
Biennale in the same year and the Tokyo
Biennale in 1957. He then showcased his
works around the world including countries
such as Brussels, São Paulo, New York and
the U.K.
