Born in 1933 in Chikhli, Gujarat, C D Mistry
was an admirer of the early Indian modernists
and acknowledged his strong attraction to
their concept of art possessing a distinct
‘national’ character. Consequently, much
of his work centres around folk art, which
he stylised and transformed into something
entirely unique. Mistry applied this
stylisation to Indian mythology and nature,
adopting icons from these traditions and
reimagining them as symbols. He has also
illustrated narratives from the Hindu epics,
the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. The
deities Ganesha, Shakti, and Muralidhar
appear vividly coloured on his canvases,
which are adorned with folk motifs and
intricate textures.
