Sadanand Bakre was one of the founders of
the Bombay Progressive Artists' Group (PAG).
Born in 1920, he had a deep interest in art since
childhood, encouragement from his teacher
fueled his journey of artistic exploration. He held
his first solo exhibition at Gokhale School, at age
16 which included still life, clay models, pastel
work, and watercolour landscapes. He joined
the sculpture department of Sir J J School of Art
in 1939. His talent was soon recognised and he
began modelling in clay as well as making plaster
cast and bronze casting. In 1944, Bakre was
honoured with the Lord Harding Scholarship for a
Diploma in Sculpture. He moved towards exploring
new methods and techniques along with other
members of the Progressive Artists’ Group.
