SUMMER SCENES IN KASHMEER
by Mrs. H. Clark
Publisher: Day & Son, London, Lithographer to the Queen
Year: Circa 1858
Plates: 12
Size: 12 x 16 x 1 in (30.5 x 40.6 x 2.5 cm)
The timing of the publication of Summer Scenes in Kashmeer
is noteworthy; 1858 marked the final year of the Indian Mutiny,
also known as the First War of Independence. In Britain, stories
and visual depictions of the conflict had sparked significant
interest in India. It is likely that Day & Son aimed to capitalize
on this fascination by offering an extensive range of material
related to the subcontinent. Summer Scenes in Kashmeer
was promoted in The Publishers’ Circular under the category
“Christmas Presents: Illustrated and Illuminated Works,”
appearing alongside other notable volumes such as “Curry and
Rice; or, the Ingredients of Social Life at ‘Our Station’ in India”
by Captain George F. Atkinson and “The Campaign in India –
1857-58: The Military Operations before Delhi”.
Contemporary maroon half morocco, with raised bands at the
spine, Morocco title label on upper cover gilt.
